The market turned its attention to crop maturity as the first freeze of the fall hit many areas of the Midwest. Corn mature reached 73% nationally vs. 92% on average in this week’s crop progress report. The Dakotas are far behind average as South Dakota reported 53% mature and North Dakota reported 42% mature this week as freezing temperatures hit.
Corn harvested was reported 22% complete vs. 38% last year and 36% on average. Soybeans harvested are 26% complete vs. 37% last year and 49% on average.

Weekly crop progress shows 58% of the corn crop is mature as of 10/6/2019. However, a closer look shows less than 40% of the crop in Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota has reached maturity yet. This becomes more important when looking at the forecast and seeing the potential for freezing temperatures and snow in parts of Minnesota and the Dakotas this weekend. 15% of the corn crop and 14% of the soybean crop has been harvested.

Nationwide corn condition scores rebounded this week to 57% good-excellent vs. 55% last week and 69% last year. However, actual harvest and yields are more meaningful at this time of year than condition scores. Corn mature is up to 29% vs. 69% last year and 57% on average leaving the majority of the crop vulnerable to a frost/freeze event but there isn’t any in the near term forecast. Corn harvested is at 7% vs. 11% on average which is roughly 560 million bushels less harvested than the average at this time.
Soybeans dropping leaves are at 34% vs. 68% last year and 59% on average. Soybean conditions were steady this week at 54% good-excellent vs. 68% last year.

The Weekly Crop Progress and Condition reports show corn and soybeans continue to march towards maturity at a pace about 1 to 2 weeks behind the average progress. However, a change in corn conditions is what stood out in the report.
Corn conditions were expected to be reported at steady to slightly better. Instead, corn conditions declined to 55% good-excellent vs. 58% last week and 68% a year ago. The decline in scores was highlighted by an 8% drop in Illinois scores. Corn dented reached 55% vs. 84% last year and 77% on average.
Soybean conditions were steady vs. last week at 55% good-excellent vs. 68% last year. Soybeans setting pods are at 92% vs. 100% last year and 99% on average. That means 7% of the soybean crop was still not setting pods yet on September 8th.

As the calendar rolls over to September, crop progress takes greater focus as we try to get this crop to maturity before a killing frost/freeze event occurs. It’s particularly interesting that 86% of the soybean crop is setting pods vs. 98% last year and 96% on average. That means 10% of the soybean crop is not setting pods yet on September 1st that normally would be. Soybean conditions were steady at 55% good-excellent this week vs. 66% last year.
Corn is also well behind with 41% of the crop dented vs. 73% last year and 63% on average. Corn conditions improved to 58% good-excellent vs. 57% last week and 67% last year.

The Weekly Crop Progress report from NASS showed corn and soybean planting continue to lag far behind the average pace. As of June 2nd, corn planting is 67% complete and soybean planting is 39% complete.
The eastern states of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio show the largest amount behind average as well as South Dakota.
Normally by this report, we would start seeing national corn crop condition ratings but due to slow development, it may be another week or two before we see those numbers.
