Storm damage from two weeks ago combined with dry conditions across much of the country resulted in a drop in corn and soybean crop condition scores this week. There were large declines in Iowa, but Illinois, Nebraska, and South Dakota also saw notable deterioration in conditions.
Corn conditions were reported 64% good-excellent vs. 69% last week. Soybean conditions were reported 69% good-excellent vs. 72% last week.

The 2020 corn and soybean crops are rapidly moving toward the finish line. Crop Progress continues to report ahead of average progress pace. The corn crop is 82% silking and 22% in the dough stage this week while the soybean crop is 76% blooming and 43% setting pods. All of those figures are ahead of average and well ahead of last year.
However, the surprise in this week’s report was the improvement in crop condition scores. The scores were expected to be either side of unchanged from last week but instead showed nice improvement.
The corn crop is rated 72% good-excellent vs. 69% last week. The soybean crop is also rated 72% good-excellent vs. 69% last week. The biggest jump in scores came from Nebraska and Illinois for both crops. Iowa scores declined for both crops due to dryness.

After showing big gains last week, corn and soybean crop condition scores gave up much of those gains in eastern corn belt states in this week’s report. The national corn crop condition scores declined to 71% good-excellent vs. 73% last week. The national soybean crop condition score was unchanged at 71% good-excellent.
Corn silking is behind average at 10% this week and is expected to rapidly increase at the same time much of the corn belt is experiencing above to much-above temperatures over the next two weeks which is supporting prices.

Corn and soybean condition scores improved by 1% each this week. There were big gains in the eastern states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan which more than offset declines in western states. Those eastern states benefited from better than expected precipitation last week.
Corn conditions improved to 73% good-excellent vs. 72% last week and soybean conditions improved to 71% good-excellent vs. 70% last week.

Corn conditions recovered slightly this week after a surprising drop last week. Corn conditions were reported at 72% good-excellent vs. 71% last week. Soybean condition scores drifted lower to 70% good-excellent vs. 72% last week. Rains and cooler temperatures helped to stabilize crop conditions.

Corn and soybean progress continues to move forward ahead of the 5-year average pace. However, corn conditions slipped this week down to 71% good-excellent vs. 75% last week. While Minnesota corn conditions improved, all the other large corn producing states slipped with Nebraska showing a large 12% decline. Soybean conditions were steady at 72% good-excellent.

The corn and soybean crops continue to progress ahead of the 5-year average pace according to NASS. Corn planting is 97% complete and soybean planting is 86% complete.
Crop conditions have become the focal point of traders and they have shown improvement this week. Corn conditions improved to 75% good-excellent vs. 74% last week and soybeans improved to 72% good-excellent vs. 70% in last week’s initial soybean condition scores.

Weekly crop progress reported that May ended with 93% of the corn crop and 75% of the soybean crop planted. Corn emerged is at 78% and soybeans emerged are at 52%. All of those figures are ahead of 5-year averages and well ahead of last year at this time.
Corn condition scores improved to 74% good-excellent vs. the initial score of 70% last week. The initial soybean condition scores of the year were released this week at 70% good-excellent.

This week’s Crop Condition and Progress report brought the first national corn condition scores. The corn crop is rated 70% good-excellent led by Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota which are all rated above 80% good-excellent.
The corn crop is 88% planted and 64% emerged as of Sunday. Soybean progress is also moving along quickly with 65% of the crop planted and 35% emerged.

The Weekly Crop Progress reports shows the US corn and soybean crops continue to quickly move ahead. National corn and soybean planting and emergence are moving ahead of the 5-year average pace. However there are regional disparities. In general, the western belt crops are further along than the eastern belt states. One big exception is North Dakota where wet and cold conditions have left progress far behind and prevent plant dates are soon here.

Western corn belt planting is going very fast with North Dakota being the exception due to cold and wet conditions. The Eastern corn belt progress was slowed due to heavy rains about a week ago.

Weekly crop progress showed farmers are taking advantage of good April weather and planting corn at a very rapid pace. Corn planting this week is 27% complete vs. 12% last year and 20% on average.
Soybean planting is also getting a good start as it is 8% complete this week vs. 2% last year and 4% on average.
